xarvio and intive collaborate for intuitive solutions in Digital Farming

Munich, Germany – July 11th, 2019 – BASF Digital Farming GmbH and intive push the boundaries in digital farming with xarvio™ SCOUTING App, a digital product designed to support all 600 million farmers on our planet. A pocket assistant, equipped with image recognition and deep learning algorithms, enables farmers to better monitor fields for stress factors, such as weeds and diseases, optimizing their crop production.

Modern advances in high-tech solutions for the agriculture sector include decision support that equips farmers with digital products offering real-time and actionable agronomic knowledge. BASF’s xarvio™ SCOUTING App, designed and developed with intive, helps farmers monitor plant stress factors using a regular smartphone camera. By taking a picture, they can detect and identify in-field stress with unprecedented precision. xarvio™ SCOUTING recognizes plant diseases, weeds and leaf damage, identifies and counts insects, examines the nitrogen status and – equipped with deep learning technology – continuously improves itself by analyzing more pictures.

Individually and collectively gathered user data can be shared with others, thus contributing to a community-built database. The notification feature informs about possible risks in the area and push messages help in managing threats in advance. The application is part of a digital product suite and already proved useful for growers in more than 40 countries. Considering its predecessor app called WEEDSCOUT (developed independently), more than 100 countries benefit from BASF’s digital support in the form of smart apps. The more users connect with the digital community, the more valuable large-scale knowledge it generates.

"As varied as the types of agriculture and the philosophies of individual farms may be, each season, all farmers face the challenge of economically using their resources, protecting their crops and competitively running their farm in the long term.
